Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 20:11:24 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: Latest Re WTC...plans I hope one and all had the best Fourth of July they could in the circumstances...the first without the Twin Towers, and we hope the last before the commitment is made to their full-scale reconstruction. Email list member Helle Cannacott, who lost a cousin September 11th, was able to speak at the hearing May 23rd but will not be able to make Listening To The City II July 20th.She has however offered the following on our pro-rebuilders' networking dinner afterwards: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- How many of the pro-rebuild would go to the later networking? 10, 50, 100 ++? If it is to be a rather large group, I'd imagine that one would have to arrange for a banquet hall, and thus know aead of time so one could arrange for it. Then again, not meaning to sound pessimistic, but after sitting all day at one function already (& with food also served) how many will have energy left for another meeting. Thus the "aft" gathering might end up rather "impromptu", and a smaller venue might do. Also, I imagine people might not want to travel too far from the area. A few places which might in that case be considered: Diner style: Tick Tock Diner (24 hr spot) 481 8th Ave. (bet 33 &34st) Skylight Diner (24 hr spot) 402 W 34th St. (bet 9 & 10 Ave) West Side Diner 360 9th Ave @ 31 St. "Grill"/"Steak" style: P/G/Kings 18 W 33rd St. @ 5th Ave. (Across the street from the Empire State Bldg.) 162 W 34th Street (bet 6 & 7) contains a complex of restaurants: Charley O's TGI Friday's Houlihan's (I've heard Houlihan's can often accommodate a larger group- how large?) Market Cafe 496 9th Ave @ 37th St. (Hear it's "good for the money) Some other "Good-n-Cheap": Blarney Stone 259 W 34th 106 W 32nd St. 402 8th Ave. Tad's Steak House (somewhat "cafeteria" style) 152 W 34th St. (Close to 7th Ave.) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The Javits Center of course is on 11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets. I would like to hear input from anyone getting this who will be there on the day, whether they're going to be at the dinner and what eatery they recommend. We need to get this planned! I think the networking dinner will serve a useful function... after hard hours of pressing our case in the broad arena, it will be refreshing to gather strictly with those with whom we share our goals, whether our experience has been as the crest of a triumphant wave or as flotsam tossed in a tempest on a hostile sea. The six development options around which the agenda will be based have yet to be released, despite the published timeline...the lag in schedule is an interesting development and hard to say what will result. Of course as soon as I get hold of the options I'll make sure the whole list knows about it...so we can work up our talking points before the event. If you can possibly spend July 20th at the Javits Center making your pro-rebuilding views known, and have not yet registered,CALL 800-862-3154 and REGISTER!!!! Same for if you can't make the 20th but CAN make the alternate on the 22nd! I've gotten a copy of SOMETIME LOFTY TOWERS:A Photographic Memorial of the World Trade Center (Browntrout Publishers)... has some good pictures of the Twins, but doesn't address the future at all. Are there any post-September-11 books out there that DO take a pro-rebuilding stance?...obviously these would be the ones we should recommend. -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
