Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 16:52:52 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC:Appeal for LTTC Volunteers I assume that any of you who are registered for the LTTC event on the 20th got the following appeal to join its volunteer staff...which is most appropriate for those who are in the city. Actually working as part of the organizing process for the event may require behaving more impartially than we like, but I think some of us should try,and report back on just what they require, because the other side will doubtless be providing volunteers of their own. This is in a way the final stage of "getting out the vote" for July 20th,though of course more battles lie ahead, and victory will go to the side that doesn't get tired of fighting! Maybe we'll change some minds...I had a little contact today with someone who was anti-rebuilding last week (wanted whole site empty) but now speaks of a "change of heart". ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 15:09:52 -0500 From: registration@listeningtothecity.org To: le@main.put.com Subject: Volunteer -- Make History! Dear "Listening to the City" Participant: Thank you for registering to participate in the "Listening to the City" program on July 20, 2002. We are overwhelmed and excited by the positive response and support we've received from communities throughout the region. Your participation is crucial to make the event a success and we look forward to seeing you on July 20th. We also need help today! We're writing to let you know there are many opportunities to help our effort between now and July 20th. We are organizing a team of volunteers to help us call registered and interested participants to generate excitement about the event. Volunteering will give you an opportunity to meet the "Listening to the City" staff and your fellow participants. We have a number of various daytime, evening and weekend hours to choose from between today and July 19th. Our staff will provide a full orientation and training. All volunteer opportunities will be located in Lower Manhattan or Midtown. Once you sign-up, we will send you specific meeting location and staff contact information. To sign up as a volunteer, visit the New York Cares website www.nycares.org and click on the "Help With the Recovery Effort". Look for the "Listening to the City" projects listed; they are arranged by date and time. All volunteers are welcome to register through New York Cares. Thank you for your support! "Listening to the City" Staff http://www.listeningtothecity.org ---------- End forwarded message ---------- I had a letter published in the Putnam County Courier today, they don't have their letters on their website. It may prompt ongoing dialogue through their letter column. Write YOUR local papers to urge reconstructing the Twins...and get ready for the next phase of commentary on the official plans! Alex Butziger has pointed out that the appeal in the new Blueprint for new buildings to be "easily evacuated" is a veiled recommendation that they be short...since taller buildings with many strong stairwells actually offer the best opportunity to live long enough to evacuate,we need to pick up on it as a reason the new buildings have to be tall enough to be safe, instead! I note from passing mention in the "Summary and Response to Comments" that the future public hearings in August and October may be somewhere other than the Schimmel Center, because of handicapped-access concerns. In any event,we'll need to be there in force in each of the sections of the auditorium between which they rotate comments! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
