Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 17:04:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding Events/News [anyone who asked to be removed and hasn't been, asked from an address that wasn't ON the list and didn't confirm which address was supposed to be removed!] Today is the final day of registration,I understand, for the online Listening-To-The-City at http://dialogues.listeningtothecity.org/ so hurry up and sign up...the dialogues begin tomorrow. I tried registering myself today, since the form had a box to check on whether you had been to the July 20th event...implying that a Yes answer would not automatically disqualify you. However,I have not received the confirmation email others have received even though the web form told me I was registered. We'll see...I'll certainly take the time to make my points again if allowed to! The NY Post had a story today saying that the speculation on the amount of office space at the site being reduced could lower Silverstein's insurance benefit for the attacks... http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/53536.htm and regrettably the story includes the spin that LTTC II said the buildings proposed were too large, when the worst thing about the plans was voted that they were too short! Don't forget the rebuild@nypost.com opening for 150-word prose on what you want built,or the comment windows now open for the site plan options by mail,by email,or in person at Federal Hall. We're still looking for petition/literature table volunteers near the exhibit starting next weekend. Please let me know and I'll put you in touch with the others. Two events Wednesday are noted at the Gotham Gazette site: Community Board 1 (info@cb1.org) is holding a meeting of its World Trade Center Site/Memorial Committee at its offices at 49-51 Chambers Street at 5:30 PM,and the Civic Alliance (RSVP to Petra@rpa.org) is holding a meeting at the Salmagundi Club,47 5th Avenue,at 8 PM. (This CA meeting is in the evening...the last one was in the morning during the federal hearing on the structural collapse of the Towers). Neither of these groups is pro-Towers,but they should be observed and communicated with non-adversarially about our concerns. A Guinness Book some years ago gave the height of the South Tower (Two,B,etc) as 1362 feet 5-1/4 inches,NOT 1362 feet even, and erroneously said it was the taller tower.I generally call for two 1368-foot-or-more towers, though perhaps the North Tower had more inches too. If we can only get a committment to ONE very tall tower, it has to be substantially taller than 1368 feet, since we may not get another and one can not replace two of a given size! Pataki is way ahead in the polls, not sure how his rebuilding stance can best be used to hurt him.As noted,my letter blasting his position to a paper in his back yard drew no responses defending him or questioning my take on getting the Towers back. A site worth keeping an eye on that I have mentioned before and just added to the resource list at http:///www.put.com/wtc/ : Downtown Express at http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?brd=1841 (a community paper for Lower Manhattan,a bit anti-Towers editorially but they offer moderated comment-posting for all their stories and some other resources...pro-Towers comments might be useful). You might,if your browser has the right bells and whistles, care to try the "Ground Zero Planner" at gothamgazette.com. See you on the 111th floor on 9-11-11! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
