Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 23:37:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding #97:News and More The New York Post's Steve Cuozzo has come out with another attack on the lies being used to push for cutbacks in office space on the WTC site: http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/55952.htm Mayor Bloomberg met yesterday with family-member activists who wanted his support for leaving the footprints empty down to bedrock, displacing train routes. He was noncommittal about this, but emphasized his desire for housing on the site. A recent problem caused by the destruction of the non-residential character of urban districts was pointed out to me...because there are more people in Chelsea, there is a need for electricity substations to provide them with power...and a community of neighbors who agitate to prevent such things being built near them! While,as was pointed out to me,the idea of using the whole WTC site for electricity substations (the new 7 WTC is being built on top of an electricity substation) would not be a welcome result of this, this goes to show the error of urban planning that does not provide for areas that are NOT residential, and NOT planned by and for local residents, that are therefore better able to serve the whole city. Bloomberg seems blind to this. A deal has been cut to change the name of Newark International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport (rather than "Liberty International Airport at Newark" as proposed) and extend its lease from 2031 to 2065. I've been discussing the issue of petition wording with some volunteers, I'm open to suggestions but cautious about any coalition-busting content. Weather forecasts make me unsure just when I'll be coming into Manhattan this weekend. If I'm not there,I'll be finishing my site plan comments. We also need to plan the rally! No reports yet from either of the hearings/events tonight (I was unable to see the televised one).I know Joe Wright and Jonathan Hakala were going to Battery Park City,Russ Barton at least I think was going to Queens...if you were there, how did they go? The Gotham Gazette board is now requiring valid emails to post messages, while Riff's NYCS backup site, which he is hoping the whole NYCS community will migrate to,now requires logins to even SEE messages. Since I avoid such entanglements,I will not be reading messages on that site. There were a few twit messages posted on the CBS board today... the DownTownNYC board has been pretty quiet but traffic has mainly been on our side. Remember, the Manhattan hearing is a week from tonight! May be leafletting/canvassing that day before getting on line... we need as many warm bodies spread through that auditorium as we can get! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
